Suffolk County DSA Chapter Meeting: White Supremacy and Black Liberation

Date:
Saturday, February 17, 2018 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
  • Long Island Action

Join the Suffolk County Democratic Socialists of America for our 9th chapter meeting! We have a carpool system (see below) and will have a Childcare Professional on-site.

We are excited to announce that we will have Dr. Angela Jones, Associate Professor of Sociology at Farmingdale State College who will be giving a talk and holding a discussion around:
"Beyond Martin and Rosa: White Supremacy and the History of Black Liberation"

In this talk, Angela Jones will discuss her research on the history of Black liberation movements. Specifically, drawing from her groundbreaking books, African American Civil Rights: Early Activism and the Niagara Movement and The Modern African American Political Thought Reader: From David Walker to Barack Obama, Jones will unpack the ways that institutionalized White supremacy has shaped our understanding of Black Liberation in the United States.

Jones will emphasize that White supremacy also always interacts with capitalism and patriarchy. It is important that conversations about the history of Black political thought and activism uses an intersectional framework—that is how does class, gender, and sexuality also influence the ideologies of Black liberation politics? This analysis can provide worthwhile insight into the complexities of challenging overlapping systems of oppression.

Many of the most influential leaders within Black liberation were also misogynistic, homophobic, and transphobic. An intersectional analysis of the history of Black liberation can teach us a lot. Today, many activists, particularly in class/labor based movements struggle with coalition building and fostering and sustaining intersectional liberation movements. Sometimes, we learn important things not just from the things our political predecessors got right—but from the things they got wrong.
